El mate

La palabra mate deriva del quechua "mati", que significa vaso o recipiente para beber, pero se ha generalizado como nombre vulgar del fruto de la calabacera –Lagenaria vulgaris-, en especial en las variedades utilizadas para preparar y servir la infusión de yerba mate (poro y galleta). Así, con la posterior proliferación de recipientes destinados a preparar esta infusión costruidos con los más variados materiales, también se usa la palabra mate para referirse a ellos.
Luego, por extensión, el vocablo mate pasó también a designar a la infusión propiamente dicha.

Según sea la manera en que se prepare esta bebida, se la distingue como:
Mate amargo, verde o cimarrón: es el cebado sin azúcar;
Mate dulce , preparado con azúcar;
Tereré, mate amargo cebado con agua fría;
Mate cocido o yerbeao, el que se prepara más o menos como el té.

En esta sección nos referiremos principalmente al mate cebado (dulce o amargo), inseparable compañero de nuestra gente.

En la expresión popular, mate es también sinónimo de cabeza.

La rueda

Se llama así al grupo de yerbeadores que comparten una reunión amenizada por el mate. Originada en la rueda del fogón y con todos sus atributos sociales, en términos específicamente materos, se refiere al ordenamiento asignado por el cebador a cada uno de los participantes, a fin de mantener una distribución equitativa del mate. El objetivo es que el que acaba de tomar el mate, no vuelva a hacerlo hasta que haya recibido el suyo cada uno de los demás integrantes de la rueda. A este ciclo se le llama vuelta.
A veces, cuando la reunión es muy numerosa, y para no hacer tan larga la espera entre un mate y otro, suele haber en la rueda más de un mate e incluso más de un cebador. Es también frecuente en estos casos, que en la rueda haya un mate dulce y otro amargo.
Generalmente la rueda tiene dicha forma geométrica, pero esta característica no es obligatoria, y en algunos casos, circunstancias tales como el cambio de lugar de alguno de los integrantes, la llegada de uno nuevo o el alejamiento de otro, alteran dicha morfología, poniendo a prueba la memoria del cebador que siempre aspirará a que todos tomen la misma cantidad de mates.
